If that is what you prefer! If you want to commission me and you specify in your commission, “I want this to be drawn in an MLP show style.” then I’ll gladly do that as well. I’m capable of switchin!
They lose a lot of their cartoon appeal, though, not that it's bad but it doesn't really fit most of the show characters (or even OCs) to have more realistic face structure. Not trying to tell you what to do, just adding to the discussion, your style is your call, at the end of the day.
Yea, I’m aware that they lose their cartoonish appeal, but here’s the thing.
Whether you agree with me or not, the MLP style is a formulated style. It was designed to be easy to execute.
The MLP show style has horse characteristics, but if you’re going to rely solely on the MLP show style for all of your pony/horse illustrations, then you are greatly limiting your abilities as an artist.
I don’t dislike the MLP show style! I am however a bit tired of it. I find it to be greatly limiting in how expressive I can execute characters. That, and the MLP show style gets to a point where breaking the rules of that style start to become wonky. It’s not right imo to focus on a formula for so long that it just becomes your go to whenever drawing any kind of horse character. There’s no development there.
One of my weak points as an artist is not knowing how proper anatomy and form is executed. While I definitely execute my drawings like I know wtf I’m doing, I assure you that this isn’t the case most of the time. I don’t have a total grip on what I’m doing.
So I’ve bought online courses and I’m watching lots of videos on how to properly understand anatomy and figure drawing in my fields of interest.
I’m currently in the process of understanding the forms of horse’s and human anatomy from the inside out. Everything from bone structure, to muscle placement and how they work. It is a lot of work.
Being able to learn this stuff from the inside out allows us as artists to understand how the body of all living things behave, and what our limits/abilities are. Once you’ve got an understanding of this, you can move on to simplifying the forms of what you’re drawing so that they become much easier to execute. Things like breaking down things into shapes, using bean techniques, robo beans, lines of action, etc.
After you understand this, THEN you can better understand how to break the rules. When the MLP show style was produced, I’m fairly certain that the artists had an understanding, or at least studied before hand, the anatomy of horses.
So to wrap this all up, while I understand there are people here who would rather see me continue with the MLP style, I’m going to be drawing a lot of my characters (horses and pones included) with the information and approaches I’m learning. This is mostly due too A. Me wanting to implement this information into my brain so that it becomes muscle memory, and B.It’s just fun!
So yea. I understand what I’m doing and what some people might want me to continue doing. If you want me to improve as an artist, however, you need to allow me to go through these artistic phases.
Thanks for the ask! I enjoy talking about this stuff.
Opinion on keeping two separate blogs for either gore/grimdark vs everything else, or nsfw (including gore/grimdark) vs sfw? Do you think it's worth the effort/upkeep to have two blogs?
I wrote out a mad long response to this but then my browser backed out and I lost all of it, so now I’m turnt.
Keep the two separate was the basic gist of the message. It’s not worth the hassle to keep SFW and NSFW together, especially if you want to show your work to anyone who might be interested.
It kinda sucks to tell people in person that I’m a digital illustrator and then not have a blog that’s totally okay to show off in public and be proud of. Showing people a grim blog isn’t the way to get into the industry.
Not unless you plan on doing what I plan on doing, but I’m not letting anyone know my secret plans to rule the world.
If you started a blog with SFW content and NSFW content at the same time, then it may become the expected narrative of your blog and no one would really care that much. At least not the people who know what they’re getting themselves into.
Still, it’s unfair to couple the two together imo. It’s better to have 2 blogs.
This is coming from someone who wished they started with a SFW art blog first.
Any tips of an artist hoping to wiggle their way into the snuff/necro/gore type of niche?
Get ready to feel like no one pays attention to what you do for a long time.
Devotion to this kind of thing is something you’re definitely going to need. This isn’t something you do to get the likes or to get popular. This is something that is serving a community of mostly insecure viewers.
I’m not insulting or faulting them for that either. It’s not something most people are willing to admit that they are into, and if they are, they might have some fucked up inner conflicts that they’re dealing with. This is all speaking from experience.
So first tip is to get used to the fact that this is about helping people in this community, and it’s about enjoying it openly. It isn’t about anything else other than that.
Second tip is something most artists will say whenever it comes to sticking with content, but just KEEP doing it. If this is what you like to do, and this goes for just about ANYTHING in life, give it 100% of what you got and be genuine about it. This should be something that you don’t have to think about. Do it and get better.
How do you feel on poison? Not really the painful sort. More of the "Huh, I drank poison. Oooooo, lots of pretty colors." Dead. Kinda poison. With maybe a longer period of the pretty colors and losing strength.
I’m good with Poison stuff. Poison can be a lot of fun!
So you like the asteitic of the cold inanimate body, but not idea of suffering on an individual. You ever look into like anatomy classes it may intreasts you? No idea of your schooling, sorry for the rambeliness
Well, I guess you can say that? I’m not really 100% into the coldness of it all. I can appreciate it in a good number of contexts, but like, I’m not into morgue stuff. I’ve drawn it before, but I’m not into ice cold bodies or anything. Living Dead is also stuff I don’t really like.
I just like limpness and interim events. Their death makes a big difference in how arousing the situation is as well. I’m not into hanging all that much, I kinda find it boring. The more expressive a body can be from the death, the more into it I can be!
I can’t really explain why that is, but there’s just something about the whole crumbling process that I like.
So I do like the whole ded body thing. I love it and I mean, yea there are things about it that I’m very particular about.
Something that I think would be useful for all of you to know is that I’m not into torture, pain, or anything that would imply prolonged suffering.
At least not in the regards to my arousal. That kind of stuff I don’t really like tbh!
Like, if it fits a story context, then yea I’ll draw it, but when it comes to the sort of sexually erotic stuff I draw, I don’t like to touch those topics. I’m not big on putting characters through a lot of pain, and I’m certainly not a fan of torture. To me that kind of stuff is just way to cruel for me to handle.
I mean, I’m sure we can read into this all day, but it is something I wanted to share.
Say I want to commission a character from a webcomic that I don't own. Would I still have to ask the owner for permission to comm said character?
I want to say yesssssss. The lines get a bit grey there since you can technically still reach out to the writer/artist of the webcomic and ask if they’d be willing to let that sort of art happen. Especially if it’s a smaller webcomic.
Have you seen bojack horseman? Best description I have is a toned down rick and morty
I have watched Bojack Horseman and Rick and Morty.
Tbh I think they’re both two completely different shows. I can see the parallels the two shows might have in regards to the main characters, but they both encompass two entirely different settings that influence the character’s moral compass.
You make very nice villain horses. I approve of his design.
I like bad guys a lot. I also like my protagonists to be super fucked up in some weird way.
The good guy narrative is sort nice, but I appreciate protagonists that are lost in a strange world. It’s familiar to them, but they deal with a lot of inner conflict.
Is Goldtooth into rape or necro? Or does he kill for only the fun of killing itself?
Gold Tooth is a senseless killer. He doesn’t really take much joy in necro or anything of the sorts. He steals and goes to any lengths to get what he wants.
Who stripped them, and why? Was he in need of ammunition, weapons and pants? Or, he took advantage of them? I can say they're quiet a sight for sore eyes. And during this war, I bet he has seen a lot!
Normally after a battle he’ll strip enemy corpses of any resources that he and his company can use. He just also happens to strip em down goood if you know what I mean
